For our September Blogger of the Month, we’ve chosen to feature Saskia, creator of Naturally Sassy. We love vegetarian and vegan food here at URBAN Eat, that’s why we created sandwiches like the Shabby Chic Pea sandwich.
The interesting thing about Saskia is that she danced professionally as a ballerina up until early 2016. As a ballerina, food to Saskia was simply there to make her look a certain way. It was at the age of 15 after years of trying to conform to the ‘perfect’ physique the industry required that Saskia decided to change the way she understood and used food to fuel her body. This is the reason we wanted to ask her a few questions about her blog and love for food:
1. What inspired you to start your blog?
I’ve always enjoyed cooking and eating, trying out new recipes and creating my own, then I got a really good camera for my birthday and got the photography bug. These all naturally came together into a hobby blog which I started in 2011 and it grew from there!
2. Where do you find inspiration for recipes?
All over the place – magazines, the internet, restaurant and takeaway menus, supermarkets, and sometimes just random inspiration that strikes in the middle of the night! At the moment my recipes are mostly vegan, so I’m experimenting with vegan-ising lots of my favourite takeaway dishes, comfort food and baking recipes.
3. What is your favourite recipe in your blog and why?
Ooh there are so many to choose from, and it really depends what I’m in the mood for, but right at the moment I would probably choose a Mushroom & Merlot ‘Posh Pasty’ which I posted recently – homemade rough-puff pastry with mushrooms in a rich red wine gravy – totally delicious!
4. What would be your dream destination regarding food?
Probably Thailand, I love just about any Thai food I’ve ever tried, but have never been there so would love to go one day and discover all those really fresh, authentic flavours.
5. What is your most spectacular kitchen fail?
My first ever attempt at baking on my own, when I was 5 or 6. I wanted to make fairy cakes without any help from grown-ups, and when it said to add the eggs, I did – there was nothing in the instructions about cracking them first and throwing away the shells, so I just put them in whole. There was a lot of crunching when the first cakes were tasted!!
6. What’s your favourite part about being a Vegetarian?
I like that my food choices are ‘kind’ ones – kind to the planet, kind to my body, and kind to animals too. Making a vegetarian and vegan diet taste as varied and totally delicious as possible is what gets me really excited, I just love experimenting with ingredients and flavours to make ludicrously tasty food.
