Daddy Donkey & URBAN eat: The Quest For The Perfect Burrito
We are super excited to share with you a fantastic story about Joel from Daddy Donkey. We both share our passion for street and melting pot of cultures and we try to bring some of that authentic food vibe through our fantastic food range.
Daddy Donkey is a delicious Mexican grill based in Leather Lane in central London. Joel, who is a creator behind this fabulous place, started with his first burrito stand in 2005 and moved to a proper shop in 2013.
Joel was studying Spanish & Business at Leeds University when he took a year out living in Mexico and fell in love with the food straight away! He really liked a lot of the regional food coming out of central Mexico, although he preferred the American twists on the heavily fried local foods.
The idea behind Daddy Donkey was created when Joel worked with a mate in a Notting Hill restaurant. This was 2005 and street food was in its infancy, even in London. They did a lot of research into food on the go, prices, ranges and locations. They based their offer on burritos, a version of the taco which was easy to eat on the move and quick to make – something Joel spotted as a key need for consumers.
This research lead them to Leather Lane, a vibrant area around Hatton Garden where they set up their first stall and sold around 30 burritos on their first day. Thank goodness they kept coming back! From a stall to a wagon to their famous Airstream caravan – they were the leaders in burritos and we still think they do the best ones in London.
Daddy Donkey has a massive range of options and personalisation, Joel even told us his secret favourite burrito recipe that you just have to go and taste it for yourself! Highly recommended!
