Top 5 Food Tips for Freshers

We know that the first term at university is daunting, fun, tiring, scary and fulfilling all in equal measure but it’s important to eat well (and do your laundry!) Consequently, our freshers-scarred team have put together our Top 5 Food Tips to get you through your first term.

1. – Make big, eat small

Get to love your freezer, make big meals like chillis or Bolognese sauces, eat some and freeze some. You can reheat frozen meals in a few minutes. Don’t forget to bulk out your sauces with cheap ingredients like peas or lentils. They can really go a long way!

2. – Prepare for the first fortnight

Don’t live on Starburst and muffins for your first few weeks…! Before you leave for Uni, get a big box together full of tinned food like soups, beans and sweetcorn, jarred food like pasta or curry sauces, and dried food like pasta and rice. This won’t go off on the journey and will make your first few weeks easier.

3. – Buy in bulk

Those student staples like pasta, rice and tinned tomatoes all have a long shelf life so you can buy in bulk and save loads. Lots of big supermarkets now have World Food sections with 10kg bags of pasta and rice, these can be very cheap per kilo. Get down your Lidl or Aldi for your tinned tomatoes, but buy them in packs of 24.

4. – Remember your Union Shop

Your Union Shop on campus will have the same access to promotional deals on food as the likes of Spar and Budgens. You can get some really great deals in your SU shop, many will change every fortnight so keep a look out for new offers. Others are permanent, check out the lunchtime Meal Deals on offer with some great ranges of sandwiches, salads and pasties.

5.– Remember you’re living with others now!

Just remember that if you’re in halls, burning something will set off a fire alarm and everyone will get evacuated. Even 200 people at 3am. Keep an eye on your toast and think of drunk cooking like drunk texting, just don’t!
So that’s it, our Top 5 Food Tips. Enjoy your food, enjoy Uni and don’t panic!
