The Best Place to Get a Good Meal? The School Campus!

Remember school dinners? They used to be vile, hateful things with mountains of processed slop piled up on your plate tasting of everything but what they advertised. This put many kids off eating at schools and colleges on a full-time basis, opting to take their own in so as to ensure they got an appetizing meal at break times.

Oh how the times have changed according to an article from America. The Chicago Sun-Times recently reported that the best place to get a delicious meal, sampling all the flavours of the world, was the on-campus restaurants. With today’s students fans of more sophisticated meals as opposed to the traditional on-campus foods, favouring healthier, more exotic items such as halal sandwiches, fajitas and paella, to name just a few.

To accommodate these “modern” students with their more broad tastes in food, schools, colleges and Universities are hiring restaurant chefs to come in and prepare meals, as well as getting dieticians and nutritionists to prepare the menus to ensure that they aren’t just well fed, but that they get a healthy, well-cooked meal by a top chef – a real leap from the days of the scary looking dinner ladies!

Rachel Warner, the marketing director for the National Association of College and University Food Services said “It’s not just spaghetti for the Italian meals and tacos for Mexican anymore. The shift in dining is driven by the consumers. They come in with higher expectations and are increasingly aware of the different kinds of foods available to them nowadays.

“Sushi is no longer considered exotic for example, students are coming in and having a much greater say in what they want to see on the menu rather than just what they want off it.”

Some of the latest trends in foods were developed on US college campuses, with students at Loyola University in Chicago drinking hormone-free milk and also taking a class where they are taught to convert used dining hall vegetable oil into renewable fuels.

Get in touch with us and tell us about the range of foods on offer on your University campus. We’d be particularly interested to hear about the range of halal foods on offer. Keep an eye on the URBAN eat site for all our new product developments over the coming months.
