At URBAN eat, we love food. We spend hours and hours trying different ingredients together, in the hope that our products will be taste sensations which everyone will love. The way different foods complement each other is a science and we are still making discoveries.
Everyone knows the classic combinations such as Fish and Chips, Pie and Mash and Jelly and Ice Cream;, these are flavours which understandably come together, but what about the less obvious examples? We have all come across someone eating a mix that shocked and surprised us, but let’s not be quick to judge. What are the best concoctions that work despite making no sense whatsoever, what are the best weird food combinations that taste good?
Chicken and Jam
This is the combination that sparked our thinking. I brought in a sandwich using chicken from my Sunday roast, and with the chicken was strawberry jam. While I don’t think this is an odd combination, this divided the office. It’s a bit like adding cranberry jelly to turkey and a bit of salt for flavour.
Chocolate Covered Bacon
These are probably some of the favourite ingredients for many people – religion and dietary restriction permitting – so why has it taken so long for these great foods to come together? Although I was a little apprehensive, it was very nice and didn’t taste of pure guilt, which is what I expected.
Cooked Breakfast, with Pancakes and Syrup
Pancakes are an American institution and cooked breakfast an English tradition. They are both patrons of the morning in their regions with very different flavours. Like Churchill and Roosevelt, Laurel and Hardy, and the transatlantic versions of The Office, the combination of two great parts make an even greater whole.
Coca Cola and Chicken
Now most of us, at some stage, have had a trip to a fast food outlet for fried chicken and Coca-Cola, right? But what about chicken fried in Coca Cola?
Try this Coca Cola Ribs recipe and let us know what you think. It takes about 2 hours to cook and is pretty simple. It didn’t taste as nice as it sounded or smelt, but it’s a good conversation starter if you’re cooking for ‘the big game’ with your mates.
Avocado and Coffee
So we have opened your eyes to food pairings, what about drink? This drink originated in Indonesia and can be blended with ice or blended into a shake. In Indonesia it’s called an “es alpokat” and here is the recipe.
Deep Fried Mars Bar
How could we forget the classic of classic combination that is a dietary requirement for some of our friends in Glasgow? If you are further South, Crispy Candy Co. in Camden does a great job, although this is probably the unhealthiest meal I have ever had. If you want to find your local distributor I have started your search here for you.
